A Proposal for Without Day

The site for the new Scottish parliament should be leveled.
The Periphery of the site should then be planted with mature birch, larch and pine. This must be as dense as possible. The inner area should be planted with the same species but more randomly and far less dense.

On completion the new parliament should then be able to go about its business.

A proposal: Generation Room

I would like to propose that a space be identified within the new buiding and be named the generation room. An interior space, the manufacture of which begins on the opening day of the new parliament.

A room designed and constructed using the most expensive and rare materials and employing craftsmen and women from around the world. Mixing the modern with the ancient, the new and the old and the radical with the traditional. The design should produce an environment of such significance as to be discussed by all of Scotland. A room which when visited will create adoration, wonder and disbelief in the eyes of visitors.

The timescale for its completed construction should be placed at 35 years, the period of a generation.

A Proposal for a Plaidie

A thread from a garment belonging to, or attributed to, every member of the population of Scotland, from the dissolution f the Parliment in 1707, to its recall in 1999.

The threads will be sorted for colour, washed, carded and respun and woven into a ceremonial plaidie. This will be worn on all such occasions of state as require the presence of the whole people. The tartan would be designed by its makers, who would be drawn from all over Scotland.
